The 2022 Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and decorated WNBA Head Coach to host benefit luncheon in San Antonio
Former San Antonio Spurs assistant Coach and current two-time WNBA Champion Head Coach for the Las Vegas Aces, Becky Hammon, is set to be a keynote speaker at the Hilton Brooks Embassy Suites next month on March 27th in San Antonio
Hammon, who is a fan-favorite of the local community, is speaking on behalf of raising funds for the local Salvation Army via luncheon. The goal is to raise money for a charitable cause to give back to the San Antonio community.
Brad Mayhar, Public Relations Manager for The Salvation Army of San Antonio, says having Becky Hammon as the keynote speaker for the Luncheon is great for bringing awareness to their programs that give back to the community.
The funds raised from the luncheon will go towards local emergency family shelters, social services programs, rental assistance, utility assistance, veterans programs, and more.
“Becky is a person of faith,” Mayhar explained. “She has a message of overcoming adversity and beating the odds. And who better to motivate our supporters than a respected, decorated WNBA Head Coach?”
Hammon is no stranger to overcoming adversity. The San Antonio Spurs made national headlines in 2014 when San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich added Hammon to his coaching tree, making her the first woman to become an assistant coach in the NBA. She also became the first woman in NBA history to coach an NBA team during a live game in 2020, after Popovich was ejected mid-game when the Spurs faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Hammon has spoken many times about the hurdles she has had to overcome. Most notably, she spoke on these hurdles after earning her first WNBA Championship as Las Vegas Aces Head Coach:
Mayhar adds: “Becky is beloved here in San Antonio. And she still has ties to the city of San Antonio.”
The purpose of the Salvation Army’s luncheon is for the attendees to learn about the Salvation Army, listen to Hammon’s testimony, and listen to various testimonial stories from people who benefitted directly the charitable programs.
Harvey Najim, the founder and chairman of the Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation will be the honoree for this years luncheon.
