San Antonio based rap artist and Grammy-nominated songwriter praise Spurs with 2024 Anthem "GO!"
San Antonio based artists team up to create a song inspired by the San Antonio Spurs
Northeast San Antonio based rap artist Anthony Rosser, Grammy-nominated songwriter Demond Reed, alongside beat makers Scott “Great Scott” Harrison and K-Diamond Beats have teamed up to make a track for the San Antonio Spurs titled “Go!” - a title playfully honoring the Spurs’ popular tagline ‘Go Spurs Go’.
Rosser, an artist and entrepreneur, felt compelled to create “Go” because he had a prior connection to the Spurs that was pivotal in his artistic career.
In 2022, Rosser was contacted by Devin Vassell’s family to create a 35 x 35 portrait of Vassell as a surprise gift for the Spurs shooting guard. It was a milestone moment for Rosser’s career, because it was the very first time someone paid him for his portrait art.
“(That moment) gave me the confidence to create something of value…it was a surprise gift for him (Vassell), and his family gave me creative control.”
Honored with a paid opportunity to create art, Rosser put his heart into the portrait. He custom cut diamonds and inserted them onto the canvas art with great attention to detail. The process took dozens of hours to complete.
Recently, Rosser felt inspired to create a rap song for the San Antonio Spurs as another form of artistic expression.
Just like his portrait in 2022, he wanted to put his best effort for the track. To do this, he contacted Grammy-nominated artist and San Antonio native Demond Reed to create the hook for “Go!”.
“I wanted to make something that I feel like San Antonio could be proud of,” Rosser said of the track.
“I wanted to create a song that wasn’t corny, and wasn’t tacky. This song is tasteful and creative.”
The beat, created by producers Scott “Great Scott” Harrison and K-Diamond Beats, uses a sample from Pink Martini’s, “Donde estas, Yolanda?”. The melodic beat feels like a refreshing blend of the heavily influenced Hispanic culture in San Antonio with Hip-Hop.
When listening to the lyrics, the song takes you on a journey acknowledging the accomplishments of the past Spurs players (Duncan, Ginobili, Parker) while meshing the future of Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and others.
“I wanted to pay homage within my verse to Tim Duncan and all of the San Antonio Spurs greats.” Rosser elaborated further on his passion and love for the Spurs: “The Spurs mean a lot to me. I love everything about their culture. I love how they move, how they value family, and how they put family first. They make all of us fans feel like we are a family.”
“Sometimes, they make me feel like a Spur too, but I just can’t hoop (laughs).”
Reed also expressed his love for the Spurs and what motivated him to assist Rosser on the track. “I’ve always appreciated the San Antonio Spurs organization for their grit and their grind. They don’t cheat the process. It was so cool to be able to make a song for the city I am living in. When the Spurs drafted Wemby, I became excited about the team again. When Anthony asked me to put the hook together, I was more than excited to do something for our city.”
Reed, who wrote and sang the hook on the track, discussed his love for Victor Wembanyama:
“Wemby’s passion for the game is what I like the most. It rubs off on everyone around him. He’s always so pumped up and giving his absolute best whether he’s playing in a FIBA game or in the NBA.”
Rosser explained what he wants the listeners to feel like when they listen to the track:
“We want the listeners to feel the nostalgia of the winning culture for the San Antonio Spurs, and what is to come. We come from greatness, and we are on our way to seeing greatness again. That is why the nostalgia lyrics mixed with a bit of modern blends perfectly together for the song.”
Reed hopes for many people to listen to the track and has high hopes for what is to come of the upcoming Spurs season. “I hope the fans are excited and prepared for the approaching NBA season. Imagine our communities coming together at the Frost Bank Center singing ‘GO!’. It would be great if they could include it in the lineup for the Spurs games.”
