The San Antonio Spurs announce Jacob Tobey as new Play-by-Play announcer to fill Bill Land's shoes
Jacob Tobey has been officially announced as the new TV play-by-play announcer for the San Antonio Spurs, stepping into the role previously held by long-tenured host Bill Land, who recently announced his retirement. Tobey joins Sean Elliott on the sidelines and will officially make his play by play debut on the first Spurs pre-season game October 7 versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Jacob Tobey is a proud Native American, specifically a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, adding a layer of cultural diversity to his public persona on and off the court. He graduated Cum Laude from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, with a major in broadcast journalism and a minor in Spanish in 2018.
Tobey's career began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was the weekend sports anchor at KJRH-TV. Here, he covered major sports teams like the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, University of Tulsa, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Before joining the Spurs, Tobey was the weekend sports anchor at 9NEWS in Denver, Colorado, where he started in August 2020. His work there included sports reporting and anchoring, showcasing his talent in the sports media field.
Beyond the local sports news, Tobey is an experienced play-by-play announcer for college basketball on networks like FS1 and the PAC-12 Network, indicating his versatility in sports broadcasting which he brings to the San Antonio Spurs.
Apart from his professional life, Tobey is known for his musical talents, playing acoustic guitar and singing at various venues in Denver.
